4–20 mA scaling: check the transmitter and HMI ranges

Check lower and upper range values, linear scaling and out-of-range signals before interpreting a 4–20 mA reading.

Collect the range settings first

Record the transmitter tag, engineering unit, lower range value and upper range value. Then compare these with the PLC or HMI scaling configuration. A signal can be measured correctly while the displayed process value is wrong because the receiving range is different.

For a linear transmitter, 4 mA represents the lower range value and 20 mA represents the upper range value. The span is the upper value minus the lower value; the lower value does not have to be zero.

Use the correct transfer function

Linear process value = lower range + ((mA − 4) ÷ 16) × span. For the reverse conversion, mA = 4 + 16 × (process value − lower range) ÷ span.

These tools do not apply square-root flow extraction. Check where extraction takes place before interpreting a flow signal. Applying it in both the transmitter and control system changes the result.

Separate scaling checks from calibration

A scaling calculation checks the mathematical mapping. It does not establish measurement accuracy. An approved calibration procedure needs a suitable reference, test points and acceptance tolerance. Record as-found readings before adjustment and as-left readings afterward.

Fluke describes using a loop calibrator to simulate a transmitter signal and check the receiving display. Follow the equipment manual and approved isolation procedure before any physical loop test.

When the signal is outside the normal range

The calculator flags signals outside 4–20 mA and extrapolates the linear value. Do not interpret that number as a confirmed process measurement. Read the transmitter's configured alarm and saturation settings, then investigate the signal and configuration. Fault-current thresholds depend on the device setup.
